Wedding Venues in Kolkata — A Photographer’s Guide
Having photographed weddings at most of Kolkata’s major venues over 15 years, Sourav Deb offers this guide not as a booking agent, but as a photographer who knows exactly what each space looks like under wedding conditions — its light, its challenges, its best angles, and its hidden opportunities.
ITC Royal Bengal
One of Kolkata’s grandest wedding venues. The ballroom offers exceptional height and dramatic chandelier lighting that creates beautiful highlights on bridal jewellery. The outdoor terrace and gardens provide a contrast of natural light for portraits during day events. The venue’s professional events team means logistics run smoothly, which is good for photographers.
Best for: Large, multi-event Bengali or Marwari weddings. The scale rewards expansive group shots and wide-angle ceremony coverage.
Photography notes: Bring off-camera flash for ballroom receptions. The golden hour light from the terrace is exceptional between 4–6pm.
JW Marriott Kolkata
The JW Marriott is a favourite for receptions and sangeet evenings in Kolkata. The hotel’s modern aesthetic — clean lines, high ceilings, diffused lighting — makes it forgiving for candid photography. The outdoor pool area offers a completely different visual palette for portraits.
Best for: Receptions, sangeet, and cocktail events. The light quality inside is among the best of any five-star venue in the city.
Photography notes: The indoor event spaces are exceptionally well-lit for a hotel venue. Minimal supplementary lighting needed for most events.
Taj Bengal
Taj Bengal carries a quiet grandeur that suits classical Bengali weddings. The lawns are among the most-photographed in Kolkata for ceremony and portrait work. The interior spaces have warmth and character that photographs beautifully in natural light.
Best for: Daytime ceremonies, outdoor mandap setups, and formal family portraits on the lawns.
Photography notes: The lawn at golden hour is exceptional. Book shoots between 4pm and sunset for the best outdoor light.
Hyatt Regency Kolkata
The Hyatt offers expansive banquet spaces and a well-maintained outdoor garden. Its event team is experienced with multi-cultural and destination weddings. The contemporary interiors photograph cleanly.
Best for: Large reception events and sangeet evenings. The ballroom handles high guest counts without feeling cramped in photographs.
The Lalit Great Eastern
One of Kolkata’s heritage hotels, The Lalit Great Eastern brings an architectural richness — ornate columns, high ceilings, period details — that adds a layer of visual depth to wedding photographs. The spaces feel like Kolkata in a way that newer venues do not.
Best for: Couples who want their photographs to feel rooted in the city’s history. Heritage aesthetics make every frame distinctive.
Tollygunge Club
The Tollygunge Club is Kolkata’s finest colonial heritage venue, with manicured grounds, the iconic main building, and an atmosphere that simply cannot be replicated. Photographs taken here have an inherent elegance.
Best for: Intimate ceremonies, pre-wedding portraits, and evening receptions with a sophisticated guest list.
Photography notes: Natural light is exceptional across the grounds at all times of day. The garden areas near the main building are the most sought-after portrait locations.
Royal Calcutta Golf Club
The RCGC combines heritage architecture with sweeping green lawns — a combination that produces exceptional wedding photographs. The long fairways create natural leading lines for couple portraits. Indoor banquet spaces are well-proportioned.
Best for: Garden ceremonies and receptions. A particularly strong choice for couples who want outdoor portrait work within the venue.
Raj Bari Estates — North Kolkata Heritage Mansions
North Kolkata’s Raj Bari mansions — the grand family estates of old Kolkata families — offer a completely different aesthetic from five-star hotels. Crumbling grandeur, intricate terracotta work, inner courtyards, wooden balustrades, and natural light that falls differently in every room. These locations produce some of the most distinctive wedding photographs in Bengal.
Popular Raj Bari locations: Marble Palace area, Shyambazar, Jorasanko, Pathuriaghata
Best for: Pre-wedding shoots and couples who want photographs with a distinctly Bengali cultural identity.
Photography notes: Natural light inside Raj Baris is often low and complex. Bring fast lenses. The inner courtyard light in the late morning is extraordinary.
Raj Bari Bawali
Located about 45 minutes from Kolkata, Bawali is a heritage resort built within a genuine 400-year-old Raj Bari. The architecture, gardens, ponds, and light are unlike anything available within the city. A dedicated pre-wedding shoot or intimate wedding here produces photographs that look unlike any other Kolkata wedding set.
Best for: Pre-wedding shoots, intimate destination weddings, heritage-themed events.
Princep Ghat
Not a wedding venue in the traditional sense — Princep Ghat is a riverside heritage site on the banks of the Hooghly with iconic arches, boats, and the river as backdrop. Used almost exclusively for pre-wedding photoshoots, it is one of the most popular outdoor locations in Kolkata for its combination of architectural character and waterfront light.
Best for: Pre-wedding portraits, particularly at sunrise or in the late afternoon when the river light turns golden.
Victoria Memorial
The most iconic outdoor shooting location in Kolkata. The manicured gardens, the white marble facade, the moat and the monument itself create a backdrop that is immediately recognisable as Kolkata. Widely used for pre-wedding photoshoots.
Best for: Pre-wedding shoots with a grand outdoor setting. Best light is in the morning before 10am and in the late afternoon.
Eco Park
A vast urban park in New Town with diverse landscapes — Japanese garden, bamboo grove, lake, flower fields, replica monuments. Ideal for pre-wedding shoots where the couple wants variety of backdrop within a single location.
